Procedure For Meeting Basic Math Competency By Testing

What is the Basic Math Competency Exam?

The basic math competency exam is a 3-hour exam designed to assess the basic mathematics skills of Kapiolani Community College students. This competency test may be taken in lieu of PCM 23 with special permission from the PCM coordinator. A student who passes this competency exam may skip PCM 23 and advance to Math 24 or 97.

The competency exam covers the areas of basic math that are taught in the PCM 23 course including operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents and signed numbers. In addition, the exam covers ratios and proportions, application problems, basic geometry, and English measurement conversions.

Location & Description of PCM 23 Competency Exam

  • The exam may be taken at the Holomua Center during hours designated for testing.
  • The exam will not be given if less than 3 hours remain before the closing hour as posted at the Center.

Limitations
  • A student may take the PCM 23 competency exam only one time.
  • No notes or calculators may be used during the competency exam.
Fees

  • A handling fee of $50 will be charged to students who are taking the PCM 23 competency exam for the purposes of meeting an employment competency requirement, college prerequisite requirements, or to advance to Math 24, Math 50H, or Math 81.

Results

  • The PCM 23 competency exam will be graded within 2 business days. Results will be mailed to students.
  • When a student is successful, the results will also be sent to student records to be added to the student's file.
