PCM 21: Whole Number Skills
What is PCM 21?
This preparatory course will give students who lack whole number skills the opportunity to advance to pre-college mathematics PCM 23. Instruction includes operations with whole numbers, written problems, and number sense. College success skills are also emphasized. Topics include time management, goal setting, test preparation, personal responsibility, and management of math anxiety.
Course Goals
Upon successful completion of PCM 21, the student should be able to:
- Read and write whole numbers using place value
- Round whole numbers
- Find appropriate solutions for problems involving operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) with whole numbers
- Use appropriate mathematical vocabulary
- Identify prime and composite numbers.... Find the prime factorization of a whole number.
Learning Objectives
- Find areas, perimeters and volumes of common geometric figures using appropriate units
- Solve application problems
- State and be able to use at least one math anxiety reduction technique
- State and be able to use at least one memorization strategy
- State and be able to use at least one test-taking strategy
- State and be able to use at least one time management strategy.
