Monbukagakusho Scholarship

The Monbukagakusho (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology) offers scholarships to students who wish to study at a Japanese Senshu-gakko or professional training school. The scholarship is for the duration of three years from April 2009 to March 2012 in which tuition and room and board costs are fully covered.

Selected applicants will study in one of the following areas:

Civil Engineering Architecture
Electrical Engineering Electronics
Nutrition Telecommunications
Infant Education Secretarial Studies
Hotel Management Tourism
Photography Fashion, Dressmaking
Design Other fields

Each applicant will receive one year of intensive Japanese language training at a selected Senshu-gakko followed by two years of professional educational and training in their chosen area as listed above.

Eligibility and Criteria

  • Candidates must be a high school graduate.

  • Candidates are required to register for testing in Japanese, English and Math.

  • Only Hawaii residents are eligible.

  • Participants must be 17 - 21 years of age as of April 1, 2009 (i.e. born between 4/2/1987 and 4/1/1992).

Application Deadline

Applications for the scholarship are due and must be postmarked by:

  • JUNE 27, 2008 (FRIDAY)

Application Procedures

The Monbukagakusho (Japanese Government) Scholarship Program will include the following forms. These forms are available in PDF Format. In order to view the document you must download Adobe Acrobat Reader.

1. Complete Monbukagakusho Scholarship Applicant Background Form.

The application form is available in PDF format for your reference. Please be sure to fill in all necessary information and print-out and sign before submitting application form. Incomplete applications will be ineligible for further review.

2. Submit the Following Application Materials in ONE envelope.

  1. Completed Monbukagakusho Scholarship Application Background Information Sheet.
  2. Write a Two-to-Three Page Essay on why you want to participate in this program, how this program will help you meet your educational and career objectives/goals, etc.
  3. Two letters of recommendation from faculty addressing your abilities and capabilities of successfully completing this program.

3. Await Notification by Study Abroad Coordinator, Ken Kiyohara.

Applicants initially selected for further review will receive Japanese, English, and Math test schedules. A personal interview will also be required of selected applicants. Please refer to the Study in Japan website for the Monbukagakusho sample test questions.

4. Selected Applicants will be nominated to Monbukagakusho Scholarship.

Nominated applications will be sent to Monbukagakusho, Ministry of Education and Science in Tokyo, Japan.

5. Final Selection & Notification.

Final selection will be made by Monbukagakusho and acceptance/denial letters will be mailed out accordingly.
