Grades and Academic Standing
How will I be graded in classes?
At Kapi‘olani Community College all credit classes are graded and there are several grading options available to you. The standard “A-F” grading scale is used in most classes to designate level of achievement. Consult the college catalog for details.
You should become familiar with the grading requirements of your particular program of study. Certain programs require letter grades of “C” or better for all major courses while others may require letter grades of “C” or better for all courses.
It is your responsibility to understand the grading requirements of your program of study.
How do I calculate my grade point average?
Your grade point average (GPA) is based on the Letter Grade you receive for the course, the Equivalent Grade Points for the letter grade, and the number of Credits Attempted for the course. The formula below is used to determine your grade point average.
Total grade points earned ÷ Total credits attempted = GPA
Example:
| Course | Letter Grade | Equivalent Grade Points | Credits Attempted | Grade Points Earned | ||
| English 100 | A | 4 | X | 3 | = | 12 |
| Hawaiian 101 | B | 3 | X | 4 | = | 12 |
| Math 25 | C | 2 | X | 3 | = | 6 |
| History 151 | F | 0 | X | 3 | = | 0 |
| Art 101 | CR | 0 | X | (3)* | = | 0 |
| Total: | 13 | 30 | ||||

* Credits are awarded for a “CR” grade, but are not used in calculating the GPA. Grade points are not awarded for “CR” grade.
What does academic standing mean?
Academic standing refers to the standard of achievement you obtained based on grades earned. If you attempted 12 or more credit hours with a grade point average less than 2.0 (“C” average) you are in poor academic standing and are subject to college sanctions. Refer to the Probation, Suspension, and Dismissal policy in the catalog for details.
If you are in poor academic standing you mayt be denied graduation, financial aid, and continuous enrollment. If you are on academic probation or suspension meet with your counselor before registering for classes. If you are dismissed from KCC and want to be readmitted make an appointment with the Dean of Students (`Ilima 205, phone 808.734.9522).
- Academic Probation: If you have attempted 12 or more credits with a cumulative GPA below 2.0, you will be placed on academic probation. You may continue attending school in the next semester, but you will need to maintain a 2.0 GPA each semester, until your cumulative GPA is equal to 2.0 (or “C” average).
- Academic Suspension: You will be suspended for one semester if you fail to earn at least a 2.0 GPA for courses taken while you are on academic probation.
- Academic Dismissal: You will be dismissed from Kapi‘olani Community College, when you have been previously suspended and, upon re-admittance, failed to maintain a semester GPA of at least 2.0 in a probationary semester following suspension.
