How To Prepare For An Advising Session

In order to get the most out of an advising session with an advisor/counselor it is important for students to be prepared. Preparation leads to an effective advising session that results in a better understanding in one’s personal and academic endeavors.

The following are hints to an effective advising session with an academic advisor/counselor.

• Attend an Information Session, if available, to gather information on the program of study
• Take part in career exploration activities and exercises available at the Maida Kamber Center (MKC) for Career & Transfer Services (Ilima 104, phone 808.734.9500) which may lead to a clearer academic direction
• Obtain, review, and bring advising sheets of the different programs of study being explored to the advising session
• Obtain and bring unofficial copy of the academic transcript from other colleges and/or KCC, if available, to the advising session
• Contact the advisor/counselor for the program of study or intended program of study to make an appointment
