Admission Procedure

Important notice for first aid & CPR certification

  • Please enroll in a Standard First Aid or Heartsaver FACTS course through the Continuing Education and Training Program (See the "Continuing Education" section).
  • CPR Certification must be full-certification which includes, Adult, Child, & Infant CPR (1 and 2 rescuer) and Obstructed Airway, called Healthcare Provider (See the "Continuing Education" section).

Note: These courses can be taken at Kapiolani Community College / Emergency Medical Services or American Medical Response

Prerequisites

  • Human Anatomy and Physiology
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology Lab
  • Medical Terminology (HLTH 125)

Prerequisites must be completed by October 1 for Spring admission and April 1 for Fall admission.

Application materials may be submitted beginning June 1 for Spring admission and December 1 for Fall admission.

STEP #1 : Complete the Emergency Medical Technician Program Readiness Check.

If you intend to apply for the Select Admission Emergency Medical Technician Program, complete the Emergency Medical Technician Program Readiness Check form to see if you qualify for admission.

STEP #2 : Please submit to Kekaulike Information and Service Center

New Applicants/Transfer Students/Returning Students must complete by October 1 for Spring admission and April 1 for Fall admission:

  • University of Hawai'i System Application Form
  • Application for Selective Admission Program (ASAP) Form

Currently Enrolled Students must complete and submit by October 1 for Spring admission and April 1 for Fall admission:

  • Application for Selective Admission Program (ASAP) Form

STEP #3 : Submit Kapiolani Community College Math and GE placement test scores.

Submit test scores by October 1 for Spring admission and April 1 for Fall admission.

Minimum qualifying score: Math 24 & Compass Reading level 74. Test score results are available at the Placement Test Center.

STEP #4 : Please submit to the Department of Emergency Medical Services:

Submit "Emergency Medical Services Supplemental Application Form" (available from the Department of Emergency Medical Services) pages 1 and 2 by October 1 for Spring admission and April 1 for Fall admission.

STEP #5 : Please submit to the Department of Emergency Medical Services:

  1. Submit certification of high school or GED verification (e.g. copy of high school diploma or transcript) by October 1 for Spring admission and April 1 for Fall admission.

  2. Submit college transcripts if you have attended college. Transcripts must be mailed directly from the institution to Emergency Medical Services and received by October 1 for Spring admission and April 1 for Fall admission.

  3. Submit [original] local traffic abstract and a copy of your Hawaii driver's license by October 1 for Spring admission and April 1 for Fall admission.

  4. Submit copies of current First Aid and CPR (must be full certification; see attached notice) cards by October 1 for Spring admission and April 1 for Fall admission.

  5. Submit verification of prior work/volunteer experience in the health field by October 1 for Spring admission and April 1 for Fall admission (if applicable). A work verification form is included in the EMS Supplemental Application Form on page 4.

  6. Make sure your references submit their forms by October 1 for Spring admission and April 1 for Fall admission. A minimum of three references must be submitted. Forms for references are included in the EMS Supplemental Application Form.

STEP #6 : Participate in an interview with the Emergency Medical Technician Admissions Committee.

An interview letter will be sent by the Department of Emergency Medical Services.

Review for Admissions

  • Applicants whose required materials are received by the deadline and who meet requirements will be considered for admission.

  • Selection is based on total qualifying scores in rank order--highest to lowest until admission quota is reached.

  • Total qualifying score is based on the following:
    • Related work/volunteer (Medical or Emergency) experience (within the last 5 years)
    • Interview with the Department Committee
    • Math 24 and Compass Reading level 74
    • College GPA
    • Prior completion of college Human Anatomy & Physiology, Human Anatomy & Physiology Lab, and Medical Terminology (HLTH 125). College courses must be taken within the last 5 years with grades of C or above for selection consideration purposes.
    • Letter of references.
    • Current First Aid (Standard First Aid) and CPR (Basic Life Support/Course C) Cards
    • Original local traffic abstract

  • Applicants who are on academic probation at Kapiolani Community College, who do not attend the interview, who do not possess a valid Hawaii driver's license, or a satisfactory traffic abstract will not be accepted regardless of their qualifying scores.

Note: Applicants who submit required materials, after October 1 and who meet other requirements will be considered on a space-available basis.
