Summer Financial Aid
KCC considers a financial aid year to begin in Fall and end in Summer the following year, therefore, Summer is the last term of the academic year. For instance, aid for the Summer 2008 is based on the 2007-08 academic year’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) information.
Financial aid for the summer term is limited to only federal aid: Federal Pell Grant and Federal Stafford Loans. Due to limitations on eligibility of these federal aid programs, not all students are eligible for financial assistance during the summer.
Pell Grant
Students who are eligible for the Federal Pell Grant can not receive more than the maximum annual limit. If you have received a Pell Grant for the Fall and Spring semester for full-time enrollment, you do not have any remaining Pell Grant eligibility remaining for the academic year. Those students, who were enrolled for less than full-time enrollment during the academic year, may be eligible.
Students may be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant for enrollment less than half-time.
You do not need to complete any application for summer aid (if you have already received aid for Fall and/or Spring at KCC and are only seeking the Federal Pell Grant). A revised Financial Aid Award Offer will be mailed to you or you may check your status on the MyUH portal to see if you are eligible.
Stafford Loans
Students must enroll at least half-time for the summer term to be eligible for the Federal Stafford Loan. You may enroll for 3 credits in summer I and 3 credits in summer II, 6 credits in summer I, or 6 credits in summer II.
This loan has annual maximums based on the student’s grade level and whether the student is dependent (parental information required on the FAFSA) or independent (parental information not required on the FAFSA). In determining the maximum annual limit that you may borrow, KCC considers a financial aid year to begin with Fall and end with Summer.
| Class Level | Dependent Student | Independent Student | Maximum subsidized |
| (sub + unsub) | (sub + unsub) | (Dependent or Independent) | |
| Freshman | $3,500 | $7,500 | $3,500 |
| Sophomore | $4,500 | $8,500 | $4,500 |
If you wish to apply for the Federal Stafford Loan, you must complete the three step process: 1) Stafford Entrance counseling, 2) Stafford Loan Request Form, and 3) Master Promissory Note (MPN). If you haven’t already done so, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before applying for these loans. See "Federal Stafford Loan" under the Related Links section.
