Intensive Transition Program

Who Should Take the ESOL Intensive Transition Program?

International students who wish to study for a college certificate or degree at Kapiolani Community College (KCC) may apply to the ESOL Intensive Transition Program. Admission to the Intensive Transition Program is simple. See "International Admission" under the Related Links section for step-by-step instructions.

Requirements

All students interested in the Intensive Transition Program in ESOL:

  • Must either take an admissions test to enter KCC, or be recommended by the program coordinator of another academic ESL/ESOL program in Hawaii.
  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Should be planning to study in a regular American college program.

Levels

The Intensive Transition Program (also referred to as ESOL 197) is a mixed-level, one-semester program.

After successfully completing ESOL 197, students transition to KCC Degree Programs, select a major, and begin taking KCC regular classes alongside classes in the ESOL Credit Program. For more information, see "Degree Programs at KCC" and "ESOL Credit Program" under the Related Links section.

Upon successful completion of ESOL 197, International students may be recommended for placement into ESOL credit classes, including ESOL 92, 94, or ESL 100.

How is the 197 Program Organized?

  • This Intensive English Program is for International students who wish to enter KCC.
  • Focus is on learning about American culture in two classes that develop ALL language skills - reading, writing, listening, speaking.
  • Students focus on transitioning to KCC credit classes by studying American culture and social history.
  • In this multi-skilled program, language skills are developed by:
    • Doing research
    • Reading extensively
    • Writing a variety of assignments
    • Discussing in small groups
    • Going on field trips
    • Using computers and the Internet
    • Listening to/watching videotapes
    • Giving oral presentations and conducting poster sessions

  • The class size is 15 - 20 students.
  • KCC offers a morning or an afternoon Intensive schedule*
    • Fall and Spring Semesters (16 weeks)
      • Morning Program: 8:00 a.m. to 12:20 p.m., or,
      • Afternoon Program: 12:30 p.m. to 4:50 p.m.
    • Summer Program (10 weeks)
      • 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

  • Students receive instruction each week in the wireless computer lab.
  • Students also attend special counseling sessions to help them learn about programs of study at KCC.
