Developmental English Classes - English 21 and English 22 Learning Communities

Course Goals

Students in an ENG 21/22 Learning Community register for both ENG 21 and ENG 22 at the same time.

Students develop their reading, vocabulary, and study skills while at the same time developing their understanding of the writing process and learning to shape their ideas into effective essays.

Students use ENG 21 vocabulary in both classes, and both classes share some of the same reading assignments. Common themes are covered in both classes simultaneously. For example, students learn to recognize paragraph patterns in ENG 21 and actually use the patterns in their writing in ENG 22. Teachers in ENG 21 and ENG 22 may make presentations in both classes.

Students must plan to devote many hours to study if they take this learning community because there are many assignments to be done for both classes. Students write five to six papers in ENG 22 and average one major test each week in ENG 21.

The classes are difficult but offer the student the advantage of being able to take both ENG 21 and ENG 22 in the same semester.
