College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

CLEP assesses previous learning and provides you with an opportunity to demonstrate college-level achievement through standardized tests offered by the College Board. For more information, see the Related Links section.

There are two kinds of CLEP exams:

  • General Examinations-test general knowledge in a specific area. They are broad in coverage. While the exam is based on no specific course, its content is drawn from introductory college courses that cover a wide range of topics. These exams must be taken before you complete 24 credits of college work.
  • Subject Examinations-test knowledge and ability that is normally taught in an undergraduate college level course.

Letter grades are not granted. Instead, "CR" (credit) is used and will not be calculated into your grade point average.

Eligibility

If you gained college level education in non-traditional ways (i.e., correspondence study, television courses, independent study, on-the-job training and experience, etc.) and wish to assess this knowledge you may want to take CLEP exams.

In addition, if you attended a non-accredited institution or took noncredit courses, you may want to validate this knowledge though CLEP.

Minimum Scores for College Credit

The minimum score depends on the exam taken. Kapiolani Community College (KCC) accepts the same AP exams, minimum scores, and course waivers and equivalencies as the University of Hawaii at Manoa. For more information, go to "UHM College-Level Examination Program" under the Related Links section.
